Jesus: The Unexpected

Jesus: The Unexpected

Jesus. He came into the world in a way that was different than what the Jews believed. The Jews expected and believed that the Messiah would come and liberate the Jewish people from the Romans. They believed that Jesus was going to come in strong and brash and overthrow Caesar, yet Jesus came differently. The creator of the universe came in a manger. Jesus, who slung the planets into orbit was born in the midst of animal waste. He traded gold and silver for straw and manure. He traded the singing of angels for the sounds of animals. He traded eternity for space and time. He traded His Kingship for servant-hood.Jesus, the greatest human being of all time, was born into complete and utter poverty.

So here is a thought.

If Jesus started in this manner of doing the unexpected, then why would He be what we expect?

Kind of a trippy thought isn’t it?Slightly uncomfortable.Just think about it. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matt 18:3). That is completely reverse! We grow up thinking that as we get older we become wiser and stronger, yet Jesus says that as we get older we must get younger.Huh?That seems almost opposite of what is natural. We attribute wisdom to the older people. We sit at their feet and listen intently to what they say, yet Jesus says we need to be like little children? Why?Because Jesus is in the business of doing the unexpected. From His entrance into this world Jesus Christ has been doing the unexpected. He healed the sick when He wasn’t supposed to, He gave power to women, He flipped the tables on the religious leaders (even literally…. #biblehumor), and He did the most unexpected thing imaginable, He died.

He died.

Jesus died.

When you think about the death of Jesus it seems normal and natural because that is the story we are told. We don’t think about the utter preposterousness of that act.

Walk with me.

Jesus, the Creator of the world, walks quietly to His death, which is administered by the very people He created.

When was the last time you gave up all power to let your creation kill you?

We do not give up power easily, yet Jesus gave up all power to be killed by the people He loved the most. It is absurd! Jesus had all power and authority. He could have called down angels to save Himself, yet He walked quietly to His death. Why?Because of love.

Jesus went against the grain and showed true love.

True love is seen in sacrifice.

Jesus Christ did the unexpected by loving the people that would disgrace Him. He set the standard. Jesus said, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Matt. 16:24). We are to be like Jesus and take up our cross and follow Him.

This means we are to do the unexpected.

We are the unexpected.
